The most prestigious prize in Calmore Sports Club, the “Pete Lavelle Shield” for Club Person of the Year, was won by a man who had made more than an impression in his relatively short stint with the club – the 2023 winner went to Steve Latimore.

Steve, who joined the club from Bashley (Rydal) four years ago, has been involved in coaching and managing junior teams at Calmore throughout his time and topped it all off by guiding the Under 11s to the New Forest League title this year.

But it is his enthusiasm and desire to ensure that all the kids get a chance to play and to develop that has played a key part in the growth of the junior section over the last few years.

Calmore’s Colts Co-ordinator Darren Vann spoke highly of Steve.  “He has always been prepared to do that little bit extra to make sure cricket happens for the kids, whether that be organising additional games or making sure indoor training sessions are fun and exciting for everyone.”

Club Chair Pete Lavelle echoed those sentiments.  “Since joining us from Bashley, Steve has been instrumental in the continued development of our colts section, as well as running his own side.

“Steve is always happy to help out where needed with the coaching of the other age groups and has been a great support to Darren [Vann] with all aspects of the colts teams.”

With tongue firmly in cheek, Darren added, “given his own playing career was spent with Bashley (Rydal), there are few more enjoyable sights at Loperwood Park than seeing Steve rocking a Calmore Sports hoodie and bucket hat!”.

Many congratulations Steve, welcome to the list of the club greats who have been honoured with this award since 1969.  The full list of the previous winners can be found HERE.
